Doing It
~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've been talking about my answer to the question:
"How do you manage your life and still get your books
written?" How do you--how does anyone--get the big
things done? Last month we talked about letting go of
the things that drain our energy.
For the last month, I've been thinking
about what to tell
you next. But first I had to plan a fifth birthday party for
a princess and her princess friends. Take the same
princess to the doctor and hold her hand during
uncomfortable procedures. See clients. Market my new
book. Sell and plan a conference. Fulfill important
obligations to other people. You get the picture.
In between the coming and going (and
worrying),
I thought about what to say TO YOU! What do you
have to do to get to the BIG THINGS done (or even
started)?
Then I had coffee with a friend. She
said, "How's
the memoir?" The next day, another friend asked the
same thing. Third day, third friend, same question.
&*#@!!! I hadn't written a word of my
memoir, my
big thing. But at least now I remembered the secret
to doing big things!!! Here it is:
You have to actually do them.
Yup. That's the key to getting big things done.
You have to do the work: no excuses.
You have to
write or draw or sell or manage or build or run or network
even if you:
*don't know how
*don't feel like it
*can't afford the time
*have a sick child or spouse or friend
*feel terrified
*think it's impossible
*believe that no one cares
*know that others will criticize you
You have to do the work. Tired, angry,
worried, or
overwhelmed: you need to put your butt in the chair or
your foot on the pavement and do it. You have to work
even in the midst of what my professor used to call, "the
shit of daily living." There will never be a perfect time to
do what you need to do, to accomplish what God calls
you to do. Sometimes you just have to work at the big
things while the shit piles up around you.
But how ???????????
Here are some ideas:
1. Write down your big thing goal and post it everywhere.
Tell people about it and say, "Ask me about this until I want to
strangle you."
2. Build time into your day to do the
work. Treat this time the
way you would treat time with a new lover: as absolutely
indispensible!!
3. Each morning, before you get out of
bed, think about when
you will work on your big thing. Imagine yourself DOING IT. And
doing it well.
4. Do it. For five minutes, fifteen minutes, an hour. Just try.
5. Every night, before you go to
sleep, review your day. Did you
do the big thing? Practice gratitude and compassion. Gratitude for
what you did. Compassion with yourself for not doing enough.
6. Stop talking about the big thing to
anyone who belittles your
goal, criticizes it, or distracts you. As someone once said, People
who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it!
Finally and always: seek inspiration.
Here's a song that reminds me
to keep doing it, day after day, in the midst of the shit of daily living:
Would you teach your children to tell
the truth
Would you take the high road if you could choose
Do you believe you're a victim of a great compromise
cause I believe you could change your mind and change our lives
Your life is now your life is now your
life is now
In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
Your life is now
Would you teach your children to tell
the truth
This is your time here to do what you will do
—John Mellencamp and George Green, Your Life is Now
Now get going and do it! Rochelle
