Finally, I have a brand new coaching program available for those of you who need a strategic planning session to start your next big writing project. Check out the details below!

Happy Writing!

Make NaNoWriMo Work for You
by Rochelle Melander

In 2008 119,301 people participated in National Novel Writing Month, committing to writing a 175-page or 50,000-word novel in 30 days. 21,683 people reached their goal. Since NaNoWriMo began in 1999, many of the winners have published their novels including Sarah Gruen (Flying Changes), Gail Brandeis (Self Storage), and Kimberly Llewellyn (Cashmere Boulevard).

But what if you don’t write fiction? You can still win big with National Novel Writing Month. Here’s how:

1. Learn! Every year major newspapers cover NaNoWriMo. Bookstores offer classes to teach you how to write more efficiently. Writing coaches like me offer free tips and classes to help people succeed at NaNoWriMo. Use the month to learn everything you can about writing well, no matter what you write.

2. Write! Writers of all types can use the energy and enthusiasm of NaNoWriMo to complete their own writing projects—no matter what genre they are. I encourage you to choose a project and set a writing goal that works for you. Here are some ways you can participate:
*write a marketing article a day
*write a devotion or essay a day
*write a section of your dissertation each day
*write a poem a day
*write a query letter a day
*write a blog post a day
*write a nonfiction book proposal
*write a series of short stories
*write a series of nonfiction articles

3. Get support. During NaNoWriMo, participants host write-ins at libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops. Join them. It’s a great way to meet other writers and force yourself to write more.

Now are you ready to NaNoWriMo? You can sign up to participate at the NaNoWriMo site. I’ll be offering tips and suggestions for NaNoWriMo over the next several weeks. And of course, you are more than welcome to attend our special NaNoWriMo Mastermind and my class at Boswell Book Company! Happy NaNoWriMo!
