Welcome
The June issue of Right Now! Notes
teaches you how to break out of
inertia and change your life—right now!
Right Now!
C'mon turn, turn this thing
around
Right now, hey
It's your tomorrow
Right now,
C'mon, it's everything
—Van Halen, Right Now, on
Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1
I named my coaching company, Right
Now! Coach, because I know we have
the power to change our lives for
the better right now. Not
tomorrow. Not when we get smarter,
richer, skinnier, or happier. Not
when the right relationship comes
along. Now.
The formula is simple: we take
positive small steps right now
and we get positive change—right
now.
The key to success? Taking the
steps.
The block to success? Inertia. We
think about change but we feel too
tired, trapped, helpless, weak,
overwhelmed, untrained, blocked, or
whatever to take the first step.
A Winter’s Tale
We had a bad winter. 95 inches of snow fell in Milwaukee. Our roof leaked,
and the ceiling over our entryway
collapsed. Skunks moved into the
space under our porch. Squirrels
took up residence in our eaves. We
turned down the heat to combat
rising energy costs. Other changes
in health and community took a toll
on our energy and spirits.
To cope with it all, our family
hibernated. We settled into an
evening routine of getting cozy
under blankets, watching movies,
reading books, and snacking. Then
spring came. Flowers emerged. The
skunks moved out. We stayed under
the blankets—glued to the
television, overcome by inertia.
Breaking Free
Sometime in March—still under the
blankets, nibbling on my
candy-coated chocolate—I remembered
that two actions always energize me:
walking and writing. According to
the research, both walking and
writing will make us happier.
Psychologists also report that when
we change one area of our life, we
are more likely to make additional
positive changes. We walk a bit,
maybe we write a page a day—and
pretty soon, we’re off the sofa and
engaged in life!
But I was still on the sofa. I knew
I needed help getting moving—and the
best help comes from the
company of others. New research says
that we do what our friends do. If a
friend is obese, we’re more likely
to get fat. If a friend is fit and
healthy, we’re more likely to get
fit, too.
I talked to friends. I dug out my
pedometer and journal. I walked with
my family. I wrote. Something began
to shift in me. The idea for
Walk—Write—WIN!™ was born. I’d
like to see lots of people—me
included—get off our butts and back
into our lives. So far, it’s working
for me. I know it can help you, too.
Now it’s YOUR turn . . .
Join us. If you live in Milwaukee,
I’ve got two in-person groups
going—one that meets on Wednesdays
at the lake and a second that meets
on Sundays in the inner city.
If you live somewhere else, tune
into the Walk—Write—WIN!™
blog each day. Pass this on to
as many people as possible. Let’s
get off the couch and into the
world—right now!
