Small Steps
When I face the desolate impossibility of writing five hundred pages, a sick sense of failure falls on me, and I know I can never do it. This happens every time. Then gradually I write one page and then another. One day’s work is all I can permit myself to contemplate, and I eliminate the possibility of ever finishing. —John Steinbeck

Last week, Milwaukee writer Yolanda White spoke to the Dream Keepers Writing Group and other teens. White invited the teens to list everything they believed to be impossible for them. After the teens shared about their impossibilities, she asked them to write down two small steps they could take to begin to turn their impossibilities into possibilities.

I love it! Of course big goals and crazy dreams sound impossible. But taking a small step seems doable. According to psychologist Robert Maurer, when we set a big goal, the fight or flight part of our brain freaks out. In his book, One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way, Maurer advocates taking absurdly small steps. These small steps bypass the fear center of the brain and we succeed.

Want to become a regular exerciser? Maurer encouraged a client to march in front of the television for one minute a day. After a few months, his client was able to take on an aerobics class. Want to improve your self-esteem? Maurer encourages clients to name one thing they like about themselves each day. Want to spend less money? Maurer suggests taking one item out of the shopping cart before checking out.

For years I’ve used the small step method to write books and articles. When I have a tough writing assignment, I break it into small, doable steps. I take a step, break to eat or exercise, then take another step, repeating the process until the project gets done. Sometimes those steps are squished together in a nine-day or six-week writing marathon. At other times, it takes more than a year (or five years) of small steps to finish a project.

Now it’s your turn. How might taking a small action, asking a small question, or solving a small problem CHANGE your life right now? Try it!
