Challenge Yourself!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to
“jump at de sun.” We might not land on the sun, but
at least we would get off the ground.
—Zora Neale Hurston
I've been exercising for a few years now. In December, I
mentioned to a friend that I don't sweat. She said,
"Rochelle, if you're not sweating, you're not working hard
enough." Her words challenged me to try harder. We've
been talking about how to do the big things in our lives.
Here's another clue: challenge yourself.
In the book, The Power of Full Engagement, authors Tim Loehr
and Tony Schwartz, say:
“Challenging a muscle past its current limits prompts a
phenomenon known as supercompensation. Faced with a
demand that exceeds the muscles current capacity, the body
responds by building more muscle fibers in anticipation of the
next stimulus.” (43)
In other words, you need to challenge yourself in order to grow and move
forward. Here's how:
1. Choose an appropriate challenge. You must be in control of the
challenge. Instead of trying to win the next 5K race you enter (something you
cannot control), try to improve your time.
2. Have a plan. Figure out how you'll achieve this challenge. Every
time I write a book, I create a book structure and topic list and then
do the math: how much do I have to write each week to finish this
book on time? The plan makes the challenge doable.
3. Get support. To do the big things, you need people who will affirm
you as you attempt to overcome the status quo and take up that new
thing! When I wrote my last book, I worked with a mastermind group
(similar to the ones I am starting below) and a coach. These people
gave me accountability, strategized with me through the rough spots,
and cheered my progress.
4. Rest. Most creative types know that the best ideas come when
you're resting! John Bingham talks about this in his book The
Courage to Start: “The days when you don’t run are the
days when your body incorporates the new strength needed for the
next run.”
In these months of sweating more and trying new exercise routines,
I've noticed that challenge begets challenge. The more I challenge
myself physically, the more I challenge myself in other areas of my life!
So, what are you waiting for?
I'll run fast and far away, I'll run without stopping
'Till heart and feet fail or until I can stand
Be and be not afraid
Be and be not afraid
Be and be not afraid to reach for heaven
—Tracy Chapman, Be and Be Not Afraid on
Where You Live (2005)
Go forth and challenge yourself!
