BACK TO SCHOOL!
===================
Can you smell it? It's the scent of learning in the air! Most school-going
children and adults are back at it for another year. When I dropped off my son
at school this morning, I had a little pang in my chest. I want to go to school
too! I love learning and come fall, I am pining for my own first day of classes.
I once heard that everything in nature is either growing or dying. I sometimes believe it is the same for us, for our spirits. Learning is one way we keep our spiritual selves growing.
Here are some thoughts about how to make learning a part of your life-long spiritual practice:
1. Get in the kitchen...and learn how to cook something new! Try a new recipe or a new cuisine, learn to bake bread, sample a vegetable you've never tried.
2. Move that body. Learn a new physical activity or relearn an old one. Take a dance class, hike a nature preserve, learn yoga, rock climbing, or bicycling. *With the approval of your doctor, teach your body a new trick.
3. Increase your vocabulary! Use the dictionary, word games, crossword puzzles, a word-a-day calendar, a foreign language class, or even your thesaurus to add to the amount of words you know.
4. Change your spiritual practice! Try
worshipping or praying with a new community or in a new way. My husband and I
attended both a Quaker meeting and a worship service led by a rock band this
summer -- and both places stretched our spiritual muscles.
Try walking a labyrinth, using prayer beads, or finding a prayer partner.
5. Explore the mystery of YOU! Visit a therapist, join a support group, or start a journal -- and learn more about who you are and why you do the things you do!
6. Explore new tools for learning. Yes, you can take a class from your local community center -- and you can also take a class online or on the telephone (see http:www.teleclass.com). Try learning in a new way. Buy a magazine on a topic that's new to you, take a class at a local college, find a friend to teach you a skill he or she has perfected.

"Sweet Death, Kind Death" by Amanda Cross (otherwise know as Carolyn Heilbrun).
Professor Kate Winslet does her detective work at a University.
"A Big New Free Happy Unusual Life," by
Nina Wise.
I picked this up because of the title and the insides do not disappoint. Look up
this book to discover new ways to enrich your life.
QUOTE FOR THE JOURNEY
============================
This is my favorite learning related quote:
"The illiterate of the 21st century will
not be those who cannot read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and
relearn."
-Alvin Toffler
