Creating Beauty
==============
In Barbara Cooney's lovely little book, "Miss Rumphius," Alice's grandfather
charges her with this task: "You must do something to make the world more
beautiful."
It's not a bad task for each of us. But how?
I'm a great believer in small actions. Our tiny actions, words, and gestures can create change and beauty. A quiet conversation with a stranger -- who walks away smiling. A kind word. A small gift. A warm handshake. All might plant the seeds for beauty to bloom.
A couple of weeks ago, exhausted from a night and day of caring for a sick baby, I collapsed on the bed in my office. The little one to slept -- finally -- on my chest! As I watched the Olympics, my six-year-old climbed up on the bed and snuggled in beside me. "Mom," he whispered into my ear. "Yes, Sam?" His little hand rubbed my cheek. "Mom. You are beautiful. You are so perfect." And in that moment, I was.
A holy moment is one that is set apart from ordinary life. In a holy moment we connect to God and to others in a way that is unique and not at all ordinary. And yet, small loving actions and words can transform the ordinary moment into something that is set apart, something holy, something of beauty. I read of a doctor who prays for his patients before each encounter. I know of a store that offers a gift of a fresh cut flower with each purchase. There's a woman at a church I attend who tells everyone she loves them. All holy moments.
What small action can you take to create beauty in your world?
SINGLE STEP CHALLENGE (TM)
===============================
Do one thing each day this month to make your world beautiful!
BRIEF BOOK REVIEWS
=======================
"Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Cooney.
In this picture book, Alice discovers how she can best create beauty in her
world.
"Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani.
In the midst of this sweet story (filled with all sorts of beautiful acts), the
Reverend Elmo Gasper gives some amazing instructions about life ("Listen to one
another, laugh, and see the great glory of God in each other.").
"Shrek."
Okay, it's a movie -- not a book, but we all need to stretch. It's also about
beauty -- the kind that's on the inside.
