Brief Book Reviews Quote for the Journey

Heartsongs
===========
When I was pregnant with my first child, the doctor predicted that the baby would be a girl. In those months of waiting, we spoke to baby "Emily." At the birth, we encouraged and cajoled and cheered baby "Emily" into the world. As she emerged, lovely and delicate, we learned that Emily was really Sam. As I held my little boy in my arms, I had an overwhelming sense that this boy was very much and very simply -- himself. Perfectly Sam!

A few months ago, I heard Mattie Stepanek speak about heartsongs on television. Mattie is an 11-year-old boy who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy. He believes that each person has his or her unique heartsong.

Your heartsong is who you are and how you contribute to the world. It is your life-mission. You have your own heartsong to bring to the world. You are here for a reason. Your heartsong is needed and valuable. When each of us plays our own heartsong, the world hears a rich symphony.

I love the simplicity of Mattie's message. In this culture, we are bombarded by messages that say, "Think you are okay? Think again!" and then offer us a product or service or book to fix us. When we try to live out our heartsong, we are often met with criticism from our colleagues, family, teachers, or acquaintances. You may have heard messages like these --
*That's not normal.
*You are a fool.
*You are not good enough.
*You will not succeed.
*Who do you think you are?
*Why would you do that/think that/be that?
*No one does it that way!

My message to you this month is simple: live your heartsong. Be and do what you are called to be and do in this world. Ignore those who will tell you that you cannot be you or do what brings you joy. This world needs you to be you, to share what you have to offer. Trust me. Who you are is perfect. Perfectly YOU!

SINGLE STEP CHALLENGE (TM)

BRIEF BOOK REVIEWS
=======================
"Journey Through Heartsongs" by Mattie J. T. Stepanek. This little boy offers wise words about living authentically and embracing each day as a gift.

"Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation." by Parker J. Palmer. This slim volume, by a popular author and educator, will give you deep insights into questions of self, vocation, and God's call for your life.

"To Play the Fool" by Laurie R. King. In honor of April Fool's Day, read this compelling mystery featuring a San Francisco detective and her encounter with Erasmus, a holy fool.

QUOTE FOR THE JOURNEY
============================
"I will no longer act on the outside in a way that contradicts the truth that I hold deeply on the inside. I will no longer act as if I were less than the whole person I know myself inwardly to be."
